Traditional House, North Devon
We were commissioned to create a modern day conservatory, a dining space that could be used all year round, linked directly with the kitchen. The existing house lacked any connection with the garden so the conservatory also offered opportunities to do this at the same time. The site is directly south facing so to reduce overheating in the summer and to avoid hefty heating bills in the winter it was decided to avoid a complete glass roof but to have a slither directly above the existing wall to allow natural daylight to continue to fall across the back of the kitchen. The photograph shows the contemporary solution built as a cardboard model which allowed us to demonstrate how the daylight to the kitchen would work. It also showed how the modern three dimensional form would sit against the house and within the front courtyard garden.
